ALLEDGED FORGERY: SARAKI, EKWEREMADU AND OTHERS HAVE BEEN GRANTED BAIL.

The Nigerian Senate president Alhaji Bukola Saraki and his
deputy Ike Ekweremadu today denied being guilty of court charges and
they have been granted bail. Together with them were two others also
accused of forgery: A former clerk of the national assembly Mr. Salisu
Maikasuwa and his deputy, Benedict Efeturi.
They were granted bail but the judge who ruled on the case said
that all defendants(the four) will continue their detention at the
Kuje maximum prison in Abuja pending when they meet the bail
conditions. The defendants are expected to provide two sureties with
evidence of properties in major urban areas of Abuja.

A little while later, Mr. Saraki's lawyer told journalists at
the court premises that his client had met the conditions for bail
there and then and was on his way home. Much later, all other
defendants were seen leaving the court premises.
Mr. Saraki, Mr Ekweremadu and the other two were arraigned in
court by the anti-corruption tribunal and charged for illegally
altering the Senate standing rule for electing leaders and
inaugurating the upper legislative chamber. They were charged to court
on two counts: Forgery and criminal conspiracy ultimately pointing to
a case of 'fraudulent intent'.
As for Saraki, the federal is prosecuting him on a 16 count
charge including: 'false declaration of assets' which he made as
governor of Kwara state between 2003 and 2011. There are also claims
that he continued to receive governor's salary and allowance even
after he had exited the office and had been elected senator.
On monday the defendants were arraigned at the federal high court
in Abuja. The senate rules they attempted to adjust illegally were the
rules that brought them to power.
