For the second time in a row the Chileans beat the argentines to
a championship victory. It happened yesterday night. For the Argentina
national team it was another horrible tournament after loosing out on
penalty kicks. Too bad even their star player the 'indispensable'
Messi compounded their woes by missing a vital penalty on sunday.
Both men played out a tensed second half with ten men as two
players Marcos Rojo(Argentina). and Marcelo Diaz(Chile) were both
sent off by a refree who clearly struggled to hold down some control
on the men.
The first yellow card came from the Chilean backline when Mercelo
Diaz attempted to stop a Lionel Messi that was advancing dangerously
towards the goal. He practically hacked the world player down with a
tackle across the tighs. Argentina had the first opportunity to draw
first blood when a defensive blunder allowed Higuain to go through
with a clear shot, but the Napoli striker chose to lift the ball over
the goal keeper and also got it over the goal too. Anyway it just
continued his nightmares in the national colours. As even during last
years copa America and the world cup final he missed clear cut and
decisive chances at goal.
Messi got a few chances far from goal but he got marked out
most of the times. Once he sent the Chilean backline on a red alert
when he burst forward with an amazing dribbling run, but he was
'out-bodied' by Diaz. Few seconds later the refree was brandishing a
second yellow card for Diaz.
After 120 minutes of solid display from both sides during which
three more players including Messi were booked. Messi was booked for
diving as the game ended 0-0 at full time.
During the shoot out Messi missed his own penalty on a night that
made sure he continued to lack a major trophy in his internationl
career. Messi kicked his ball over the cross after which Francisco
Silva converted Chile's final shot, handing them sure victory.
The last time Argentina got a copa America title was in 1993. 23
years ago. And just last year in the same competition, the same Chile
denied them of the trophy in a penalty shootout.
