MUSLIMS REJECT NYSC DATE.

The Muslim Rights Concern has rejected the date the NYSC has set
for NYSC 2016/2017 batch A stream II orientation course, saying that

it coincides with a time muslim corp members are supposed to be
observing their religious rituals during the ongoing fasting
(Ramadan). The group emphasised that the Ramadan period was not a
period to be joked with, describing the reasons for the set date as
purely discriminatory.
The following valid points were highlighted by the group as reasons:
1. Morning drills in NYSC camps are rigorous and there are no excuses
for not participating, then comes the dehydration period(in the
afternoon) and this can be very serious in hot areas of the north. All
these stress the body goes through drains its main sustenance-water,
and it could be dangerous for a corper to be subjected to such
conditions from day to day.
2. Inadequate shahuur and futuur: theses are meals taking early in the
morning before and in the evening after the fast. On this, the group
said that NYSC camps would not meet the necessary standards of these
meals, and they would definitely not be on schedule.
3. Running up and down and engaging in all those stressful activities
associated with NYSC camps all on an empty stomach, means courting
health problems such as ulcer.
4. Apart from being just a fasting period, Ramadan is a spiritual
exercise and its importance shouldn't be down played at all. And so
any activity that prevents a muslim from participating in this
exercise should be described as discriminatory.
The group further argued that the NYSC board should have picked an
earlier date, before the start of the fast. But the board came out to
say that the date was fixed and announced when the presidency made
fund available
