...Workers decide to start strike on friday.
Workers of This Day newspaper in a letter addressed to the
management on Tuesday gave the company an ultimatum to payup salaries
before friday or they will all be going strike.
They also added that if the management refuses to meet their
demands by the end of the warning strike, then an indefinite one will
have to begin.
Some of staff in the house revealed that they have worked so
hard to keep the paper going but they don't understand why the
management still disregards their years of sacrifice. Some time in
July last year the editorial staff in Lagos head office held a protest
to speak against the action of the management on unexplained
deductions from their salaries, tax deductions and pension. They even
went ahead to barricade entrances in the building.
Its understandable that the country is going through hard times,
and corporate bodies are not excluded, but then every worker sure
deserves his pay. And these staff have families who look up to them
for help. Even as they give their best at work, the duty of the
management is to reward them with their dues, and not playing
hide-and-seek with their cheques.
